Lucid has released the first official images of the Cosmos, the mid-size crossover that is meant to take the brand out of six-figure territory and into the part of the market where volume actually lives. Expected to land around $50,000, it is squarely aimed at the Tesla Model Y.
The pictures surfaced in the company’s latest earnings materials, and they confirm what earlier patent drawings suggested: a sloping, coupe-like roofline closer to a BMW X4 than a conventional family SUV.
Design details
- Paired horizontal LED tail lights with an unusually wide third brake light mounted low on the rear glass
- A very slim front lighting unit that appears to integrate every beam into one enclosure
- A single ultra-wide curved display dominating the dashboard, as Lucid had previously indicated
The near-horizontal rear glass is the reason for that low-mounted brake light. It looks striking, though rear visibility is an open question.
The timeline has moved
Production was originally scheduled for late 2026 at Lucid’s AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia. That has slipped: the Cosmos will now start building in early 2027 and ramp through the second half of the year. The factory is not finished, and Lucid has been explicit that it does not want to repeat the software problems that dogged the Air and the Gravity. Chief executive Silvio Napoli has framed the mid-size launch as gated on quality rather than calendar.
Why it matters
Lucid has named four must-win projects: the mid-size range, robotaxis, the Saudi factory, and an operating reset that involves layoffs and a $1.4 billion cash flow improvement. The Cosmos is the first of three planned mid-size models, and it is the one that determines whether the rest of the plan has a foundation.
